Effects of Insanity

Insanity is a condition under which one tends to have serious mental illness. Other related terms are lunacy or craziness. Others call it madness. Mad or insane people tend to do things out of the ordinary. They even hurt others and destroy valuable things. Drugs prescribed to such patients are very effective although poor administration drives the patient back to their insanity.
One does not necessarily have to be born insane. Moreover, some tough stages in one’s life lead to such undesirable illnesses. For instance, one becomes insane due to financial constraints, social problems or even psychological trauma.

In the case study of Andrea Yates, it is clear that she was a sane and upright young woman in her early life. Research has revealed that her educational background was well established. She graduated from the Milby High School in Houston in 1982. She also had some major responsibilities in her learning process. For instance, she was the class valedictorian, captain of the swim team and an officer in the National Honor Society. In addition, she successfully graduated from the University of Texas School Of Nursing in Houston. Later on, she worked as a nurse at the University of Texas M.D. from 1986 until 1994.

The life of Andrea Yates takes a new turn when she eventually ventures into dating and marriage. She gets married to Rusty Yates at the age of twenty-five. In their union, they hope to get as many children as possible. Andrea even called herself ‘Fertile Myrtle’. This clearly depicted her desire to have several children (Barton, 1996).

Statistics say that in their eight years of marriage, they gave birth to five children. It is at this point that Andrea started showing signs of insanity, since the heavy burden of raising their five children seemed to overwhelm her. This point proves that it is safer to have fewer children that are within one’s capability. She even mistreated her children and eventually called herself a bad mother. The aftermath of all this were a series of suicidal attempts. She thought that killing herself would save the situation. Rusty decided to move the family into an improved house. He hoped that this would work for his wife.

The new environment helped a lot. Andrea changed but only for a while. After her father’s death on March 12, 2001, she became insane again. This time, it got worse. Rusty took her to another psychiatrist, one Dr. Mohammed Saeed. His treatment did not help her much. At the peak of it all, Andrea murdered her five children by ruthlessly drowning them in a tab. This proves that Andrea Yates was indubitably insane.

Rusty Yates, to some extent, is to blame for the crime. He was aware of the serious condition in which his wife was. He even witnessed her trying to kill herself. He was supposed to put her under close monitoring in his absence. Letting her handle her normal house duties in her unpredictable state was careless enough of him. The fatal deaths of their innocent children would not have occurred. He was supposed to take the necessary precautions.

In conclusion, insanity is a serious condition of brain disorder. It is also termed as craziness. It has adverse effects on the patients and leads to great destruction (Layton, 2011).
