Intersectionality issues

Intersectionality issues in Nicaragua consist of discrimination and violence, particularly towards sexual minorities. From the period of the Sandinista Revolution that took place during 1962-1990, the problem is among the most important obstacles in the way of implementing gender equality in the country. The strong positions of the Roman Catholic Church play a crucial role in the process of forming homophobic attitudes. In 1992, the country adopted the antisodomy law that prohibited same-sex marriages, lesbian and gay relationships (Abelove, 2015). Even though the Sandinista Revolution proclaimed the equality of rights regardless of gender and nationality, stereotypes and prejudices towards sexual minorities are persistent in Nicaragua.

According to Samantha Abelove (2016), the LGBTI activists try to address the problems of gender in Nicaragua, but their efforts are ineffective due to strong conservative traditions in the country. They decided to create the campaign Sexuality Free from Prejudice (SFFP) that aimed to combat the issues of sexual minorities in the society. As a result, the activity changed the negative attitude towards the community. In the 1980-90s, the Sandinista government altered the role of women and marginalized groups in Nicaragua. For instance, females obtained equal opportunities to realize themselves in political, business, and social areas (Kampwirth, 2014). The situation was a step towards equality.

To conclude, the status of gender and sexual minorities in Nicaragua is discriminative. It is noticeable in the access to medical services, sexual harassment, and a high level of aggression towards LGBTI community. Moreover, the government does not enforce any law for protecting the sexual minorities from the violent attacks. The same subject may be also related to the role of women in the society. Machismo is a widespread sense in Nicaragua because men perceive themselves superior to women. Thus, intersectionality issues are related to protection of gender equality in the state.
