Summary

This paper is my reflection essay on two stories about infectious epidemics that is Ebola disease in Africa and Scourge of the Black Death in Europe. Despite the fact that these two epidemics occurred in different periods of time, they both caused a lot of human suffering and deaths. This paper analyses the difference of the two stories, their similarities and also provides my personal reflection of the stories.

In my opinion the two epidemics caught the medical fraternity unaware when they first occurred and it was difficult to find a solution to the problem as soon as possible. However, both occurrences provided a ground for learning. While it is noted that Scourge of the Black Death occurred within the period of the less medical breakthrough, the people tried as possible to contain the situation. Modernity and inventions in the medical field has improved within the flow of time and such epidemics as Scourge of the Black Death are difficult to occur again.

The establishment of modern medicine, the development of good hospitals and laboratories for experiments has significantly contributed to the reduction of epidemics across the globe. History will consider our generation to be the one that made a lot of contribution in the field of medicine. This is because most epidemics and infectious diseases have been put on control and a lot of research is being carried out in order to cure and prevent diseases. The question of how History Channel will portray our story in a movie remains interesting. However, I believe our story will be shown as a generation which had made a lot of strides and breakthrough in trying to solve both medical problems and as the same time carry out an extensive learning to provide solution for unforeseen cases in future.

Ebola disease

Reflection is quite important in academic life (Handler, & Handler, 2). My reflection on Ebola disease is clear and full of sizzling thoughts which not only inspires me to contribute towards prevention diseases but also offers a foundation for further discourse. The Ebola viral disease was first associated with an outbreak in Zaire in Africa in 1970s (Draper, 5). Ebola is a viral disease which is highly infectious and kills its victims within a short period of time .It is prudent to note that, the Ebola virus is spread through blood and multiply to other human organs. In addition, the disease is associated with profuse bleeding which cause sudden death. Ebola continue to cause havoc in Africa more so in Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and Sudan. The name Ebola came from Ebola River in the Congo where the disease was first noted. The natural ecology of this disease is still not known, although association has been linked to monkeys and bats. In the past, it said that Ebola could wipe a whole village without prevention. However; presently, Ebola disease outbreak and spread is put under control hence it cannot wipe a whole village as suggested in 1970s.Though much work should be done to eradicate the disease.

Scourge of the Black Death

Scourge of the Black Death is amazing story about an epidemic which killed many people in Europe in a period of the year 1348 through to the year 1351.The disease was highly infectious and led to lose of life of many Europeans. The exact death toll remains difficult to measure from ancient sources. Despite the fact that, Black Death period ended in 1350s, the epidemic continued in Europe, every few years until the end of the fifteenth century. Population growth both with cold weather is attributed to the spread of the epidemics.

The striking element of the above stories

The striking element of these stories is the deadly manner in which the epidemics spread. In addition, the two epidemics had no prescribed medical treatment and killed fast in the past years. Furthermore, the symptoms of the Ebola disease which include profuse bleeding of its infected victims are scaring. Scourge of the Black Death also remains a shocking event in the history of human life in Europe. It should also be noted that the two epidemics repeated occur which signifies that medical cure takes a long time to establish.

The similarities of the above two stories about epidemics is that they both killed many people during their outbreak. Secondly, their outbreak occurred occasionally within a given period of time. In addition, the two epidemics were dangerously infectious and killed within a short period of time. However, the two stories are different in many ways. While Scourge of the Black Death took place in Europe in 1340s to 1350s, Ebola was first noted in 1970s and still occur in Africa. Therefore, the period gap between these two infectious epidemics is wide.

In my opinion the two epidemics caught the medical fraternity unaware when they first occurred and it was difficult to respond to the problem as soon as possible. However, the two occurrences provided a ground for learning. While it is noted that Scourge of the Black Death occurred when less medical breakthrough had been, the people tried so well to contain the situation. Modernity and inventions in the medical field has improved with time and such epidemics like Scourge of the Black Death is difficult to occur again.
The establishment of modern medicine, the development of good hospitals and laboratories for experiments has significantly contributed to the reduction of epidemics across the globe. History will judge our generation as that which made a lot of contribution in the field of medicine. This is because most epidemics and infectious diseases have been put on control and a lot of research is being carried out in order to cure and prevent diseases. The question of how History Channel will portray our story in a movie remains interesting. However, I believe our story will be shown as a generation which had made a lot of strides and a huge breakthrough in trying to solve both medical problems and as the same time carry out an extensive learning to provide solution for unforeseen cases in future.

The impact of our generation contribution

The contribution of our generation in different fields of life such as medicine will be very important to the future generation. This is because the future generation will use our establishments as the benchmarks to improve on. It is critically significant to lay down a strong foundation in all spheres of life.

Our generation has a lot of documentary events and stories told by historians. This is because the current world is battling with several problems in different fields. In medical field for example, a great break through has been made to arrest the dangerous cases of Ebola, despite the fact that it is still a great challenge in the society. Secondly, major improvements have been made to reduce deaths caused by Aids disease which poses a great challenge to the people due to lack.

It is therefore reasonable to believe sincere that our generation has made a lot of improvements in the field of medicine. However, the medical breakthroughs in different fields are not enough as compared to the global challenges. It is therefore, important for everyone to contribute towards making the world a better place to live in. The next generation will judge us based on our relentless effort to make the world a better place to live in.
